But his aim is to incite the people against letting black children into the town's white school. Soon he has the white citizens of the town worked up. He thinks he's leading them; but a man he befriends and immediately betrays knows better. The people have become a mob. The black leader of a church and a white newspaper editor soon feel its wrath. But after a false accusation against a black student, Adam Cramer may find the people are totally and permanently out of his control.

Words can not describe the emotions that this film elicits!

I wholeheartedly agree with pjmuck's review. The movie does deal with racism. The plot is delivered in a "far from contrived" manner. The movie is believable and makes (not meant to offend) the movie To Kill a Mockingbird's delivery as tame as a Disney short.

What you are not being told is the history behind this movie. It has been released and released under many names including it's original name "I Hate Your Guts" and then "Shame". The reason for this is because the movie is so realistic, it is taboo and is disturbing.

Please note: It's not gory disturbing, it's people disturbing; you can actually believe that a small community of individuals will react as this community does to the suggestions of an outsider, William Shatner.

And the performance from Shatner, my lord!, you will not believe it's William Shatner!

If you are a film buff, buy the DVD, don't even bother renting. The VHS went Out Of Print Quickly, I am not going to miss owning this on DVD. Great viewing!

Review :

The Violent Rise of Christendom in Europe

This Italian production stars an American born in Hungary (Wilde), a German, and a Brit in key roles. American Cornell Wilde plays Constantine. Livia, a pious Christian woman loved by Constantine's friend Hadrian is played by German prodigy Christine Kauffman (at the age of 18, she was already a veteran). And the tragic British glamor- girl Belinda Lee plays Constantine's devoted wife Fausta (Lee died in a car crash shortly after this film was completed). The rest of the cast rounds out nicely with Italian actors, many of whom are quite good.

The subject matter is, ultimately, the story of Christianity's (really Eastern Orthodoxy) rise from an obscure, persecuted cult to one of Europe's dominant religions through its adoption by one of the great Byzantine Roman conquerors - Emperor Constantine. Those who are not interested in this ideologically and historically important subject should probably avoid this film, because it does, at times, move pretty slowly.

The story is epic and heroic following Constantine, Fausta, Hadrian and Livia from their young adulthood through to Constntine's rise to power and eventual unification of the empire. Constantine is depicted as a brilliant warrior, leader and strategist (which he certainly was) with stability and peace at the heart of his motivations (which is arguable). Much is left out of the story and much is changed. There is no clear indication of Constantine's formidable intellect and education, nor the ambiguity of his motives and alliances. Much of the complex intrigues of Constantine's times is ignored or altered in order to keep the story moving. Even so, the story can be a little hard to follow if you are not already familiar with the history.

The production is generally very good. The acting is fine, though Wilde and Lee are both a little stiff at times, and don't seem to have developed the chemistry appropriate for their roles. Christine Kauffman (Livia), and Fausto Tozzi (Hadrian) are excellent in their important supporting roles. The sets are great, though the occasional and unnecessary bird's eye views of Rome (a miniature) are a bit silly. the costumes are impressively detailed, and the battles are well choreographed and filmed - though it is sometimes hard to figure out what is going on in the battle scenes.

Considering the grand scale of the film, Constantine and the Cross is quite good. I enjoy historical fiction - even when it is more fiction than history - so - had I gone with my own personal enjoyment of this film, I would have given it a 7. It is a good effort to portray an important and under-examined subject. Well worth seeing by those interested in the history of religion, Christians, and movie fans who enjoy epic historical fiction.

Review :

Redgrave pere meets Mills fils.

In this so-so British comedy Michael Redgrave plays the business magnate father of a socially awkward daughter who causes all manner of misunderstandings for her father and family friend Roger Livesey when she becomes friendly with the son of their American business associate. The plot is reminiscent of the kinds of things Walt Disney used to make at around this time, a fact brought home even more so by the fact that Juliet Mills (sister of Hayley, who was to appear for Disney that year in The Parent Trap after her success in Pollyanna the year before) plays the daughter.

Unfortunately, the chuckles (laughs would be an exaggeration) do not come all that frequently, and the picture as a whole somehow also seems to smack of a British establishment aura which would have made it perfect fodder for a Conservative party fund-raiser at the time. Nevertheless, it is all quite competent, and a reasonable enough diversion for 90 minutes or so.

Her uncle is moved by her resemblance to his late wife to attempt to seduce Viridiana, and tragedy ensues. In the aftermath, Viridiana tries to assuage her guilt by creating a haven for the destitute folk who live around her uncle's estate. But from these good intentions, too, comes little good.

Classic Brunuel.

Viridiana (1961) is a tale about a young nun who's so into her faith that she tries to do what she feels is morally and ethically right. Sadly, the world has changed and no matter how hard she tries to help those around her, it all winds up biting her in the end. Viridiana is a rare masterpiece that reflects the attitudes of the society that people (such as that "lovable" despot Franco) had created and the archaic teachings of the Catholic Church. The poor nun is one of the last of the true believers who adhere's to the dogma of the Church even when most of their leaders have abandoned it. Even the poor masses (whom she relies on) fail her. Can she remain true to her faith when everyone else around her ignores it?

A classic Brunuel film. I enjoy his style of film-making. Especially the way he uses social commentary and makes it entertaining instead of being preachy and hitting the viewers over the head with his "ideals". A hard film to find but it's highly enjoyable. The best scene in the film his the beggars re-enactment of the "Last Supper" painting. Film-making at it's best!

Highest recommendation.

Disturbing

This movie really grows on you. Yes, it's true, the non-3D parts are boring, but I find them functional. Like any good freak-out movie, if it was all a freak out, you'd get worn out fast. This is like a freak-out musical in a way, where the freaky scenes are the equal of big musical numbers.

A doctor is turned on to a creepy mask by one of his patients who has turned into a homicidal maniac. Next thing you know, the doctor is trying on the mask and going insane, and oh what a mess, and his girlfriend and everyone, and blah blah blah.

Meanwhile, in the hallucinogenic mask sequences, you get to experience what it must have been like to be on LSD in the 60's. There's a whole "alternate world," where a strange, mutated man is milling around, looking for the woman (?) he is in love with in a fever dream landscape where there are skulls and burning hands and satanists and gore and other neato stuff. And it's all in bizarro 3-D! Even if it doesn't work well all the time, it's still mighty disturbing, especially for a movie from 1961! The images, and the incredible, collage-like soundtrack to the freak sequences will linger on your brain long afterwards, in the same way that wearing those horrible glasses leave an impression on your eyes after you take them off for the "normal" scenes. You're exhausted, and confused, and weirded out.

Solid Hercules entry -- beautiful to behold but a bit soul-less

For nothing else, CAPTIVE WOMEN is worth checking out because it's the Reg Park-starring Herc film that preceded the epochal HERCULES IN THE HAUNTED WORLD directed by Mario Bava -- which still remains, hands down, the best of the Italian Herc movies ever made. CAPTIVE WOMEN is extremely well produced -- excellent production design and visual FX by Hercules standards -- and that's both its big plus and its big minus. The Retromedia DVD is very, very good -- in 2.35 Cinemascope, nice transfer -- and it's terrific to see a Hercules film given this kind of loving treatment. BUT -- it does point out some of the shortcomings of CAPTIVE WOMEN. Which are, mainly, that not a helluva lot happens. Herc goes sailing, a buddy goes overboard ... and he winds up in Atlantis, where the Evil Queen (note: Queens are almost always evil, and extremely smokin' hot, in Herc movies) gives him a magic potion designed to make him fall in love with her. Second note: magic potions figure prominently in a LOT of Hercules films, and they're almost always administered by smokin' hot Evil Queens trying to get Herc to fall in love with them. That's what we love about these films. Anyhow ... great production values but a bit, well, stiff somehow.

Another under rated horror classic

I watched this late one night on my own in the 1970s and was scared and shocked. For years I wondered who Jean Arliss was until I was able to do some research on the internet. William Castle was a master of horror and gimmicks. This was one of a few horror movies that really left an impression on me.

Other movies which scared me on TV as a child or teenager in the 1960s and 1970s were:- The Tingler, 13 Ghosts, Psycho, Carnival of Souls, The Mad Magician and House of Wax.

The Hellions

I saw this movie once over 45 years ago and I've never been able to forget it. Nor do I want to forget it. Lionel Jeffries and Richard Todd were never better. Apparently it has never been released on video and I think that's a bitter shame. This South African Western is superb and deserves to be seen by everyone. The story has been compared to "High Noon", but I believe "The Hellions" packed more punch. One is used to Lionel Jeffries' portrayals of befuddled old men. But here, he is as evil as anyone I've ever seen. James Booth deserves, I believe, more credit for his role. This film is bulging with talent and should be accessible to today's audience. I definitely will keep searching.

THE SECRET MARK OF D'ARTAGNAN (Siro Marcellini, 1962) **1/2

The chance of learning of an obscure "Peplum" while leafing through Leonard Maltin's Film Guide on one day and coming across the film in its entirety on "You Tube" on the next is very remote…but this is exactly what just happened to me with this Italian variation on the classic Alexandre Dumas tales - in its original language but with hardcoded Greek subtitles, no less! While my rating agrees with the one bestowed on it by the genial American film critic, I have to say that overall this was a rather half-hearted entry in the prolific screen adventures of the altruistic quartet…so much so that only two of them (D'Artagnan and Porthos) put in an appearance here, they are on Cardinal Richelieu's side this time around(!) and, worse still, all that the 40-strong band of villainous conspirators against the French King seem prone to do are meet in various mansions around Paris to discuss what their next move shall be! Consequently, D'Artagnan is forced to show his eminence a secret fencing trick (as per the film's original title) with which he will mark the traitors' foreheads and rout them out…alas, it is nothing more elaborate than a scar in the shape of an "X"!

If the plot (co-written by the American Milton Krims!) is no great shakes, the solid production values and interesting cast make up for that: the enemies of France take to meeting dressed up as friars in a church at the start of the film – which is how we first meet D'Artagnan (George Nader)!; at the same time, we are also introduced to his main antagonist here, treacherous nobleman Georges Marchal (in his official "Peplum" appearance) – whose niece (Magali Noel), unsurprisingly, lives nearby, still roots for the King and nurses the musketeer back to health and right into her heart! True to formula, she also has a swooning maid who falls for Porthos' gruff charm – who, incidentally, had been whisked out of his farmyard retirement by D'Artagnan earlier on. Massimo Serato only has a few scenes as the resourceful Cardinal but easily steals every one of them from under the noses of his colleagues; Carlo Rustichelli's rousing score is another welcome addition to the generally pleasing if unassuming mix. In conclusion, director Marcellini only helmed a handful of movies and I should be watching the Gianni Maria Canale-starring THE DEVIL'S CAVALIERS (1959) before this Epic Easter marathon has run its course; besides, Marchal had already appeared in previous adaptations of "The Three Musketeers", namely as D'Artagnan to Gino Cervi's Porthos in Andre Hunebelle's 1953 eponymous film version.

Superior Cast Manage to make this One joke film mildly funny

As has been noted in other reviews the basic premise of this film had already been used before. This film really does it to death. What might be funny once or twice ceases to be funny on the sixth and seventh occasion. The fact that this film remains entertaining is down to the other established actors in the cast including Jimmy Edwards,Richard Wattis and Eric Barker.Edwards gained fame on TV for his blustering incompetent headmaster, rather similar to Will Hay's character and this is the character that he plays to good effect in this film.Shirley Eaton plays the glamour role.I remember when I saw the film in the cinema there was a shot of her running naked up the stairs.alas this shot has been cut out of the copy I viewed. Not the best of comedies but then not the worst.

Sword and sandal buddy movie!

I only needed to hear the "Mighty Sons of Hercules"-song in the beginning to get in a good mood from this film. A really pulpy and entertaining peplum with some fantastic ingredients, my favorites being the vulture-people and their bigbreasted queen (who of course falls in love with both Hercules and Ulisses). The non-plot is basically that Hercules is on a mission from the gods to find and capture Ulisses for blinding the Cyklops. Ulisses outsmarts Hercules and manages to escape, encounters some fantastic creatures or evil queens, is captured again, outsmarts Hercules, escapes, encounters creatures etc. in absurdum. Of course the two heroes finally becomes the best of friends and joins forces to defeat the evil king Lagos (wonderfully played by Gianni Santuccio), a sweaty, sickly and rambling madmen who likes to torture women and uses his army of neanderthal men to pillage the nearby villages in quest for total power. Great silly fun.

Misplaced confidence in the notion of working man art.

The experiment of ACT films - movies made with the British Film Union as producer - was an honorable one but not all that likely to succeed.

This is one of their better ventures - an adaptation of the hit Arnold Wesker play which wowed audiences with the set piece rush hour in the cafe kitchen scene. This one doesn't register anywhere near as well though there are moments like Bolan's Broom dance.

The impulse to put British working class life on the screen is undermined by the artificiality of British film making of the day, itself under fire with films like ROOM AT THE TOP and KNAVE OF HEARTS. The excursion into London West End scenics only makes the rest seem false. A familiar face cast get some of their best opportunities and some take advantage of them.

Show, Not Tell

The first problem with this movie is the lousy script. One of the first rules of screen writing is that you never tell about a situation when you can show it and this movie is full of people telling you what is going on, from Merry Anders' voice-over that sets up each portion of the script to the police officer explaining to James Brown why he has been volunteered to the training officer explaining each command -- well, the last is appropriate. It starts out like 'Dragnet' with its voice-over which derived from its days as a radio show, but this movie rarely exceeds that visually, remaining radio with pictures throughout.

The second is the poor direction. Edward Cahn started out directing "Crime Does Not Pay" shorts for MGM and never got out of Bs, and his handling of actors underlines why: almost every line reading is mechanical, even from the few actors who had a career worth mentioning.

Director of Photography Maury Gertsman doesn't get to do much of interest as almost every group set-up consists of compositions of every one alternated with reaction shots -- all too often a reaction close-up of the dog playing "Wolf". He does get to do some interesting lighting during the dog's patrol sequences, but even that is muted by a flat cutting speed. In fact, the lighting and camera angles in those scenes are the only thing of interest in this entire mess, and not worth waiting around for.
