Review :

Stale, unfunny but only film featuring Fernandel in the Wild West

The theme of the decent everyman happening to be the lookalike of a dangerous outlaw is not new and Fernandel himself capitalized on the trick in Verneuil's 1953 "L'Ennemi public N°1". So expect no great discovery from this slow-paced, unfunny comedy. It has really nothing to do with the classic of the genre, Ford's "The whole town's talking". On the other hand, the reconstruction of the Wild West by art director Robert Giordani is above average ( not so bad for a French picture ) and it is rather unexpected to see our Fernand from Marseille move in such exotic settings and exchange lines with British Adrienne Corri, Spanish Eleonora Vargas and American born Jess Hahn !

Review :

Glenn Ford perfectly convincing



A film that's always been held in a great deal of affection here in Spain (and not just because it's a Blasco Ibañez story, nor because hearing it dubbed into Spanish relieves us of Angela Lansbury). As far as I'm concerned, and pace the other reviewers, Glenn Ford's utterly convincing portrayal of Julio is by far the best thing about it. So what if he's a bit long in the tooth? a great many real-life playboys are, and his maturity makes the romantic dilemmas posed by the plot all the more poignant. From start to finish he's seriously, dangerously likeable, which he certainly needs to be in order to win the love of a beautiful, intelligent and patriotic Frenchwoman over her heroic Resistance husband. The romance actually convinces, against the odds, and saves a movie that might otherwise easily have been a ghastly flop.

After all, what else is there? Andre Previn's music is impressively dramatic but there is a worrying lack of restraint in the score, both in the overblown intro and the pretty but intrusive "love theme" cue, complete with solo violin, which insists on being heard every time the hero and heroine so much as glance at one another. The "four horsemen" vision manages to stay just this side of Monty Python (with the aid of swirling clouds), but doesn't save the opening scenes of the film from lurching full-pelt into overplayed melodrama (the death of the patriarch Madariaga: one too many thunderclaps for a start), and doesn't tie in too well with what was eventually left in from Blasco Ibañez's tale (pestilence? famine? where?). The plot is 100% predictable, and the rest of the acting is competent without being memorable.

I must admit, though, I was impressed by the very Minnelli-esque sequence which took Ford's eyes staring at a scene of dancing and frivolity between Nazi officers and collaborationist women, superimposing the two and mixing in newsreel-style war footage; likewise, Henreid's heartstopping portrayal, in one scene, of a man almost broken by torture, emerging from a Gestapo jail; and the finely judged acceleration at the end towards the story's predictable but satisfying climax. Not a film I will want to make a habit of seeing, but would certainly stand a second and maybe even a third viewing.

Review :

Not your typical romance

I do agree that the film was a little too long, but I still loved it. I had fully expected this film to end happily. I was heartbroken when it didn't come out the way I had pictured it. But, that's a good thing. The point of this movie isn't to show a picturesque life, it's to give a glimpse at what one could be like.

I liked some of the running themes in the movie. The "mask" theme was pretty easy to pick up on, yet it worked. The full circle the movie does from the beginning to the very end is great, too. But still, so sad. Worthy of a good cry.

The cast is all fine, but I believe Tony Perkins steals all his scenes. As Phillip, he does play many different parts. But he manages to be sincere in all of them. He did a splendid job, and I laughed heartily at many of his little "play-acting" bits. Tony proved in several movies that he is not Norman Bates; it's just a shame too few people realized it during his lifetime.

As a result of his body not being found the latter will have to wait for five years until they can inherit the count's money. Very upsetting indeed, all the more as they are required to keep up the Kéraudren estate in the meantime. To collect money, nephews and nieces organize a Son et Lumière show at the manor while busily looking for the missing corpse. But, unexpectedly, they get killed in turns. Murders or accidents? Jean-Marie, his fiancée Micheline and his cousin Edwige investigate and finally succeed in exposing the culprit. And, the count's body being found by chance, all goes back to normal.

Sound and light

Georges Franju's best works remain his earlier ones:his shorts ("le Sang des bêtes)and his two first efforts "la Tête contre les Murs" and "Les Yeux sans Visage" (the latter's influence was considerable ,notably on Amenabar's "abre los ojos"(and " Vanilla Sky", its mediocre remake ).

"Pleins Feux sur l'Assassin" is "eyes without a face"' s follow -up.As you do not change a winning team,Boileau-Narcejac (even if their names are not widely known,everyone knows "Diabolique" and "Vertigo" ,both in the IMDb top 250, which were initially their novels) who adapted Jean Redon's novel in Franju 's precedent effort,wrote here the screenplay which is an original and which was never released ,to my knowledge ,as a novel.

It's moderately successful: Boileau-Narcejac ,as they did in "D'Entre les Morts" ("Vertigo") ,tried to mix thriller and supernatural .PLus Agatha Christie's whodunit.

An aristocrat dies but his heirs do not know where his body is .(but the viewer does, for the first minutes -Pierre Brasseur's short silent part- shows the old man dying).And ,which is worse,they cannot inherit ,because the body must be found ,or they would have to wait several years.In order to maintain their relative's desirable property,they set a Son et Lumière show up,based on an old legend from the Middle Ages: two lovers were caught in the act by the woman's husband and tragically died.(something like the old folk song "Matty Groves")

But it seems that someone is slowly doing away with the heirs ,and the culprit might be one of them.And the legend of long ago could repeat itself.

It is entertaining but it's a far cry from "les Yeux sans Visage". Franju was not to reach such heights afterward:his remake of Feuillade's "Judex" had its moments and both "Thomas L'Imposteur "and "Thérèse Desqueyroux" were estimable works which owed a lot to thespian Emmanuelle Riva.

Franju could have become the French Roman Polanski.
