Review :

above average, with good Sean Connery

The film is above average, well made, but lacking the style or brio that makes a good US or Italian crime film really fun. Sean Connery is great to look at in his leaner, pre-Bond form, and Herbert Lom is excellent. Connery plays a low-level mobster, and Lom is the criminal mastermind behind the mobs. It's interesting to contrast the portrayal of violence in this early 60s British film with American or other later portrayals. The approach here is so banal, and the mobsters are obviously pulling their punches in the fight scenes. The director seems completely uninterested in making the violence realistic or exciting. The final fight, however, has some choreography to it and a few interesting touches. In summation, a paint by numbers job, competent British B film, uninspired film making, but good nostalgic fun.

One of the more entertaining spear and sandal epics.

This film was retitled to ATLAS AGAINST THE CYCLOPS when it was released in the United States, but our hero is still called "Maciste" in the film. In this one Maciste battles an assortment of bad guys and monsters including the cyclops of the title. Maciste rescues an infant from the cyclops before he dispatches with the one eyed menace.

As far these spear and sandal epics go, this one isn't too bad. It has enough action to hold one interest. It isn't as "talky" as many of the other bigger budgeted entries in the genre. Flashback scenes from this film turned in up in the later Maciste adventure, THE WITCHES CURSE which started Kirk Morris. I would like to see this film in colour, but for some reason all video versions that I have found are in B&W.

another tough Korean War film

As the Korean War is down to its last days before the armistice, a captain orders his men on a meaningless and dangerous night time mission. Since the men and the captain all know that the war is going to be over, the mission assignment causes a lot of friction which is displayed in several dramatic confrontations between the members of the platoon and the captain. Shot outdoors in what looks very much like a Southern California canyon, with quite a bit of shouting, and a no-name cast with and a low-budget production, AND an at times questionable script, this film could easily be turned off by a viewer with short patience. This person will, however, miss the final half hour or so, a very solid ending which features a tense situation with a land mine. In the panoply of tough and relentless Korean War movies, this one ranks up there with the other tough and low budget but better known ones.

One more Edward L Cahn calamity feature. And, as usual, produced by a sort of repeat of Sam Katzman : the sinister Robert Kent. The responsible of most of Cahn movies, especially on the last part of his career.

The story of a doctor who is hunted by the mob, because he could testify against them. So, the runaway tries to hide in another country side, far from where he lives. Unfortunately...

A scheme we have already seen a thousand of times. Nothing new. Good guys vs bad guys with predictable results. You can take care of housekeeping while watching this film, or prepare your dinner, I assure

you'll not miss anything at all. You can even get out of your house and go for shopping...When you'll come back, nobody will have to explain to you what happened during your absence.

In short, forget it. You have been warned...

Talky but interesting

Quite an eye opener for it's day, the racist tone is played full pelt by Johnnie Briggs and his seedy gang. After harassing a black man in their local café they decide to catch him and beat him up but he dies from his injuries, and to add to the plot he had been dating Briggs's sister and she is injured in the fracas.

Rather talky at times with strong London accents it plays like an episode of Eastenders, there is lot's of protective talk from Briggs's mum who dominates the household including Briggs's father played by a rather meek Donald Pleassance.

It's not quite clear how Briggs gets caught but with these short films and low budget you tend to forgive the director for any plot holes.

Lot's of bad jive music and slangy talk in the seedy coffee bar where they hang out gives the film a "Beat Girl" type scenario.

Viking Epic by Mario Bava A Winner!

ERIK THE CONQUEROR (aka THE INVADERS) was Mario Bava's second directorial assignment after his meteoric success with BLACK SUNDAY (aka MASK OF THE DEMON/LA MASCHERA DEL DEMONIO (1960). ERIK THE CONQUEROR is a tale of intrigue and treachery between Viking forces and the Anglo-Saxon defenders of the British Isles in the year 786 A.D. The story begins as two children are separated from each other during a fierce battle. One of the two is taken and raised by Queen Alice (the stately & beautiful Francoise Christophe) and the other child remains with his Viking people. Both bear tatoos which identify them as brothers. They grow up to face each other in battle but have been tricked by Rutford (a deliciously evil portrayal by Andrea Checchi), a scheming English noble who intends to take the throne he covets for himself. Art direction alone is dazzling with phospherescent hues of crimson, gold, emerald & cobalt blue. There are many macabre touches courtesy of Bava, and in an interview with noted film historian David Del Valle, Cameron Mitchell marvelled at Bava's mastery of trick photography and flawless cinematographic style. Mitchell gives one of his finest performances here as Aaron, the Viking and Giorgio Ardisson is splendid as Erik, his brother and King/defender of Britain. The golden, flaxen beauty of Alice & Ellen Kessler is used o good effect here as the eventual lovers of Erik and Aaron. A must-see for Bava worshippers and required viewing for epic aficionados!

THE SINS OF RACHEL CADE (Gordon Douglas, 1961) **1/2

Tolerable romantic/exotic/religious melodrama from producer Henry Blanke, who had earlier been responsible for the more acclaimed THE NUN'S STORY and the more popular THE MIRACLE (both 1959). As a matter of fact, this basically extends the African scenes of the former's second half to take up its entire length but, at the same time, incorporating the emotional/vocational struggle inherent in the latter – and, for good measure, the male stars of each (Peter Finch and Roger Moore respectively) were brought on board for this new venture as well! Anyway, the titular figure is played, quite convincingly, by Angie Dickinson; as for her co-stars, Finch is typically commanding but one has a hard time believing Moore as either a flyer (the setting the eve of WWII) or a doctor (and it is clear he did not take the part seriously himself)! The most prominent among the indigenous community are 'holy man' Juano Hernandez (who holds his own against Finch in the acting stakes) and 'medicine man' Woody Strode (whose contribution is, alas, rather limited). The narrative takes a thoroughly predictable but pleasing route – with earnest (and luscious) Dickinson having as hard a time convincing agnostic Governor Finch of the true faith as the superstitious natives…but the 'miracle' finally occurs when she cures a local boy, whom Hernandez and Strode had already given up for dead because his father had dared defy the gods! Similarly, when Moore's dashing but uncommitted character turns up in the second half, conflict naturally arises between him and Finch over the heroine (since both have no qualms about showing their feelings to the missionary girl)! The denouement, then, is as unlikely (with spiritual grace taking the upper hand over basic human fulfillment) as it is melodramatic, but that's Hollywood for you. While unsurprisingly meandering somewhat over the course of its generous two-hour length, the film emerges a good-looking and mildly enjoyable effort very typical of the time – also marked by a lush score courtesy of veteran Max Steiner (that is perhaps exceedingly reminiscent of his Oscar-winning theme from NOW, VOYAGER [1942]!). Incidentally, while the full title of this one smacks of exploitation which is barely present in the film proper, the print shown on TCM UK actually dropped the heroine's foibles and left us with just her name – an alternate moniker under which, however, it seems never to have been shown until now!

Ursus, son of Hercules, does his famous father proud

There's nothing quite like these "maciste" style films from the early 60's; they have a unique charm to them. Great sword & sandals adventure, featuring a muscle bound hero, often a name from Greek Mythology. Ursus was the son of Hercules, and his name means bear; appropriate since that's how strong he is. Ed Fury plays our hero with all the humanity and heroism required. Ursus has weaknesses and is mortal (unlike his Mt. Olympis ancestry) but he can whup the bad guys just fine, thank you.

In addition to the muscular lead, some other familiar but always appealing sword and sandal elements are here. The women are insanely beautiful, and their flowing dresses and magic hair styles supplement this. The blind servant girl is very sympathetically and believably played by pretty Maria Merlo, best in the cast. She captures many difficult emotions; her facial expressions in the Ursus vs. animal death match are spot on. Raven haired knockout Moira Orfei, who appeared in several of these films, plays the kidnapped betrothed of Ursus; whom he sets out to rescue. Along the way, the son of Herc encounters cults, a femme-fatale queen, and an evil empire that needs to be overthrown. Every sub-plot works, and contributes to the story.

For a low budget film, this one surprises. There are a few editing goofs (most notably in the soundtrack music), but the translation dubbing is remarkably well done. A few bits of dialogue are awkward, but yet again it's in a charming fashion that you can't help but love. The "You filthy murderers!" exclamation is perfect, and sets off one of the best mass-mayhem battle scenes ever.

One of the very best of these Italian and Spanish made mythological adventure movies. Very re-watchable stuff.

A Naked Time Capsule

Quite honestly, this film is crap. It's laughably written, woodenly acted, badly filmed and dubbed, and contains only a wisp of a plot. It's also pretty boring. And yet, I couldn't look away! Must have been the wall-to-wall nudity, the whole raison d'etre of this turkey.

It's quite refreshing to see so many beautiful naked women circa 1961. There's no silicone to be found, and these women look happy, healthy and well tanned. Watching them cavort for the length of this movie is a pleasure, but it's the only pleasure you'll get out of this lame duck.

The nudity must have been racy in its day, but today it's strictly PG. There's plenty of breasts and buttocks, both male and female, but none of the nasty bits. In fact, all the nudists either cover their genitalia with some object - a newspaper, a towel - or, they deliberately turn their hips away from the camera as they walk by. At one point there's a volleyball game taking place: the team with their backs to the camera is completely nude, but the team facing it are all wearing swimsuit bottoms. It's pretty silly stuff, but the charm lies in seeing such an abundant display of T&A in such an old film.

The plot, if anyone actually cares, concerns a female reporter going undercover at a nudist camp to gather material for an expose in some creepy guy's newspaper. She gets into it and becomes one of them, so the creepy guy decides to go undercover as well to write an expose of his own. He eventually gets converted to the cause, and never takes his trunks off the entire time. Oh, and somehow they announce that they love each other at the end which comes completely out of nowhere, it's ridiculous.

This is an utterly cheesy yet slightly titillating flick.

The woman activist frees the dozen of low-cast women, and they take over the ship. After a storm, the captain takes back control of his ship. Since mutiny is punishable by death in the New World, the mutineers try to reroute the course, tossing Desny and Purdom in the brig. A practical male mutineer wants to throw the women overboard to save rations, but the women free Purdom and the captain to battle the mutineers. A British warship comes to the rescue, and the captain pardons Angeli and Purdom for having saved his life.

WHITE SLAVE SHIP (Silvio Amadio, 1961) **1/2

This is another peplum I wasn't previously aware of but should have, since it's also reviewed in Maltin's Film Guide; however, whereas I agreed with the latter's ** rating for THE ISLAND PRINCESS (1954), I thought this one undeserving of a measly *1/2 !

Essentially an average but quite lively swashbuckler, its plot deals with an 18th century sea voyage from England to America – with a shipload of both male and female prisoners destined to be sold as slaves; along the way, a mutiny takes place – the film's original title, L'AMMUTINAMENTO, translates to just that – but the prisoners find as much discord among their own ranks as to the treatment of the crew and passengers, the course they should take, etc. The protagonists are two former Hollywood hopefuls – Italian Pier Angeli (here billed under her full name of Annamaria Pierangeli) and Englishman Edmund Purdom; however, the two characters – she's the prize girl of an imprisoned pimp (who lands in jail with the express purpose of winning herself a place on the ship and liberate him!), while he's a doctor who treated a wounded rebel and was accused of being an accomplice in the conspiracy against the King – barely interact throughout. In fact, his obligatory romantic interest is supplied by Michele Girardon (whom I've just rewatched in Luis Bunuel's DEATH IN THE GARDEN [1956]): again, she's given a fairly good role as an aristocratic girl (whom Purdom initially despises and insults for showing him pity, which leads him to be publicly flogged); incidentally, the pimp himself shows an interest in the girl (much to Angeli's chagrin) and the two men eventually contend over her in a fistfight (which Purdom obviously wins). The hero also shares an ambiguous relationship with the ship's captain (Ivan Desny); when the leader of the mutineers demonstrates himself to be incapable of steering the ship, Purdom has to plead with the imprisoned Desny to take over.

The second half does tend somewhat towards histrionics: a baby is born on board; Angeli is continually shunned by the pimp (whom she later has no qualms about killing); Girardon's kid brother is after Purdom – at one point springing at him with a poker – for 'defiling' her; another aristocratic female passenger commits suicide after the leader of the mutineers has made her his concubine, etc. Events come to a head at the climax, when the former male prisoners decide to throw the women overboard indiscriminately in shark-infested waters because the food rations have been severely diminished after a storm – but Purdom, the captain and what remains of the crew defend them, and the two sides engage in open combat; a vessel sailing close by witnesses the scene and subsequently picks up the survivors – asked to identify his companions, Captain Desny refers to the few remaining prisoners merely as fellow passengers. By the way, there were a few unintentionally funny moments throughout: when the captain asks Purdom what has become of his pet parrot, the latter deadpans "Roasted with potatoes on the side"!; the doctor later does a double-take when he finds Desny has been forced to assume the duties of butler on his own ship!; the leader of the mutineers, then, only decides to personally steer the ship because the ex-prisoner currently at the wheel seems not to even be aware what it's for!

For the record, this is the fourth film from director Amadio that I've watched – the others were all equally obscure i.e. the peplum WAR GODS OF BABYLON (1962), the erotic drama ISLAND OF THE SWEDES (1969) and the romantic thriller DISPERATAMENTE L'ESTATE SCORSA (1970).

A love story with a party of pilgrims on a voyage

This is a story about a party of pilgrims on a voyage to worship at the Shiv Sagar temple during the annual festival. With a party consisting of many diverse pilgrims with different objectives to accomplish. In the party there is "Chagan" the small time thief ( Dev Anand ) and Roopa, the dancer ( Waheeda Rehman ) who is going there to perform before the lord shiva before she starts dancing professionally. The story moves pretty well with Chagan and Roopa falling in love which is not approved by her mother. There is one pilgrim who will donate an expensive piece of diamond in the waters in the name of lord shiva but there are a couple of crooks going after the diamond. The film has some very good songs with the music of Shankar Jaikishan. All in all it is entertaining movie with the two popular stars like Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. I gave it a seven out of ten.

For this act of courage and mercy, one of the Emirs, Moutamin, calls Rodrigo "El Cid," and pledges eternal friendship to the Cid of Vivar… And so, in freeing the Moors, Rodrigo, accidentally, stumbled onto a battle, not to his luscious bride, but to a battle that will change his whole life…

In the court of King Ferdinand, Rodrigo's act of clemency is misinterpreted, and he's accused of treason by his rival Don Ordonez for refusing to turn over to him the captures Moors…

Unfortunately, Rodrigo's aged father, Don Diego, is slapped by the Champion of the king, Count Gormaz, father of his beloved Chimene… Rodrigo begs Gormaz an apology; it is refused… A duel begins and the champion is badly wounded… Before he dies, however, he asks Chimene to avenge his death…

Chimene's wish is fulfilled when King Ramiro of Aragon challenges King Ferdinand for the possession of the city of Calahorra by the outcome of a single combat…El Cid convinces the king to permit him to fight Don Martin…Thus, according to the custom of trial by combat, God would judge Rodrigo's guilt or innocence…

"El Cid" is an intense film, lavish and spectacular, bigger than any in terms of cast and impressive as any in visual terms… Miklós Rózsa gave a new dimension to the emotion that Anthony Mann was trying to express…

Mann gives us a human story with a love story balanced with the most strongly image of a hero the world has ever seen… He presented a man of honor who thinks always of his wife, his country, and his king first… Even in death, his thoughts are for others and not himself…

El Cid insults kings and noblemen in the name of justice and integrity and does what he knows to be right… He battles the king's living sword in respect of his father… He accepts the challenge of a champion of a king to prove himself innocent of treason and other things… He shows a prince how any man can kill and only a king can give life… He fights 13 knights, at the same time, to free a prisoner… Yet he is in addition to all of this an extremely principled leader… He accepts exile for life from the country he loves, and yet he is the only man in Spain who 'could humble a king and would give a leper to drink from his own pouch…'

The joust sequence called "The fight for Calahorra," is perhaps the most rousing, exciting, one-to-one combat ever filmed… The battle scenes at Valencia are taken on an epic scale… But the value of Anthony Mann's movie is the characterization in which Charlton Heston played El Cid's life… For this reason alone, the film is of greater value than most any other motion picture experience…

Review :

Weird but worthwhile

This movie is somber, downbeat, and really really weird. Many women hate this movie because of the ending. And for good reason. I guess you can say this is the kind of movie that leaves one with a bad taste in the mouth. It is the kind of movie where you want to scream at the characters--"what the hell are you doing?" But this film is hypnotic in its strange way. The performances are terrific, and the locations are stunning. They may not have been viewed that way 40 years ago, but today it is a kind of museum piece, very accurately capturing the atmosphere of New York City in the early Sixties. There is an excellent score by Aaron Copland, which was later released as "Symphony for a Great City." Since this was a low-budget movie, one really has to wonder how much he was paid to score this film. You also have to wonder why this movie was such poison for everyone associated with it. The author of the novel never wrote anything significant again. The director, Baker's hubby, faded away. Baker divorced him and Ralph Meeker hit the skids. Something Wild has many tragic dimensions, for both its characters and its stars.

a Dacoit drama taking off from Hollywood Gangster films like Manhattan Melodrama (1934)

The film is a story of two bothers on opposite sides of the law, Ganga (Dilip Kumar) and Jamuna (Nasir Khan). Having been framed for a crime he did not commit by a Zamindar (Anwar Hussain), Ganga becomes a criminal living in the mountains with his girlfriend, Dhanno (Vyjayantimala). Jamuna, educated on Ganga's money in the city, becomes an upright police officer. When years later Ganga is about to become a father, he decides to return to the village but has to face his brother who shoots him down in the name of duty. Dhanno also dies in the gun battle.Ganga Jamuna is a Dacoit drama taking off from Hollywood Gangster films like Manhattan Melodrama (1934), and pioneered a widely copied action formula of two brothers on opposite sides of the law, most notably in Deewaar (1975). The most significant departure from the Hollywood stories is that the two protagonists here are brothers rather than buddies like in Manhattan Melodrama or kids who have grown up in the same block like Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) and what's more real life brothers Dilip Kumar and Nasir Khan play the protagonists! And like most of the films of this type, the focus and sympathy is totally on the good man who is forced by circumstances to turn bad. But having taken up a life of crime, his redemption, in spite of all that he has gone through, comes only with his death.

Directed by New Theatres old-timer Nitin Bose (though supposedly ghost-directed by Dilip Kumar), Ganga Jamuna is a well-structured and briskly paced film and was notable of the use of Bhojpuri dialect, which helps make the film refreshingly real and gives it a proper locale and geography. The performances by lead artistes Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala are faultless and full marks to the latter who in spite of her South Indian upbringing speaks the Bhojpuri dialect flawlessly. While Vyjayantimala deservedly won the Filmfare Award that year for Best Actress, shockingly Dilip Kumar lost out to Raj Kapoor for the Best Actor award, which the latter won for his production Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960).

The lyrics of the film also make use of the Bhojpuri flavor and Naushad's earthy music naturally does its work to enhance the film without thrusting itself too obtrusively on the attention of the audience. Nain Lad Gayin re (sung by Mohd. Rafi), Do Hanson Ka Joda and Dhoono Dhoondo re Saajna (both sung by Lata Mangeshkar) are particularly well tuned and were popular hits.

Ganga Jamuna is one of the few Indian films that enjoy legendary cult status and runs to packed houses even when released today.
